Peaker Plant launch supports a low carbon economy for Northern Ireland

Congratulations to Powerhouse Generation, a Board member of Smart Grid Ireland on their successful achievement in obtaining an electricity generation license from the Utility Regulator of Northern Ireland. The 20MW HVO Peaker Plant is the result of a collaboration between several key players in the energy and sustainability sector. Kyotherm is supported by a local landowner, and the Cool Planet Group.

This initiative is born out of the requirement to support the power system transition to sources of renewable generation such as wind and photovoltaics and will provide essential services to the Northern Ireland electricity network across capacity, system services and energy.

Housed within an existing power station, the 20MW Peaker plant consists of:

• A 33KV, 20MW grid connection
• 10 x 2MW HVO powered generators
  • Hydrotreated vegetable oil is a fully sustainable, 100% biomass fuel which is developed in line with all diesel standards and is a direct drop in for diesel fuel.
  • It is safer to store with a higher flash point and completely biodegradable
• 5 x 4MVA transformers
• A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to ensure compliance with the Medium Combustion Plant directive (MCPD)

This is a very exciting development for Northern Ireland and will contribute to the diversification of energy sources supporting the transition to a low carbon economy.
